CPU overclocking involves increasing the processor's operating frequency beyond factory defaults. On Intel platforms, this requires a K-suffix unlocked processor and a Z-series motherboard. On AMD AM5, all Ryzen 7000 processors support Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and manual FCLK tuning without hardware restrictions.
The critical safety parameter is core voltage (Vcore). Intel recommends a maximum of 1.36V for sustained all-core operation on 13th/14th gen processors. AMD Ryzen 7000 silicon is more voltage-sensitive — sustained voltages above 1.30V accelerate electromigration, a degradation mechanism that permanently reduces max stable frequency over time.
